Quest (Highly capable) program - Lake Washington extends to first 2 grades

New Services for Kindergarten and First Grade Highly Capable Students
Lake Washington extends services offered to first two grades
Redmond, Wash. – During the 2014-15 school year, kindergarten and first grade students identified as highly capable will be eligible for services, due to changes in Washington State Law. During the first half of the year, highly capable kindergarten and 1st grade students will be identified. Those students who meet the criteria will receive services during the second semester of the 2014-15 school year.

These services extend the district’s highly capable programs that serve students from grades two through 12. Those programs will continue to serve students next year, with no changes.

Kindergarten students will be identified through a nomination and testing process. Parents may nominate their students through an online application during the normal Quest highly capable program application window, which is October 1 through 30. Students will be tested on a Saturday in the fall; the date will be announced by the start of the next school year. Those students who qualify will receive highly capable services in their home school during the second semester of the school year. They will continue to receive those services in their home school through first grade.

All students in first grade in Lake Washington elementary schools are tested in the fall to determine if they qualify for services as a highly capable student. That test has been the first step in identifying students who are placed in full-time and pull-out Quest in second grade. Starting next year, it will also be used to identify first grade students who will receive highly capable services in their home schools in second semester.

Parents of students who live in Lake Washington School District but attend private schools may also nominate their kindergarten and first grade students for testing. They will be able to nominate their students during the Quest application window, October 1 through 30.

More information concerning testing dates and services will be available on the district’s website in August.

India draws 27, 530 foreign students

Hyderabad: Despite the political turmoil in the state over the Telangana issue for the last four years, the state continues to attract foreign students in large numbers.

While 4,698 foreign students took admissions in AP — the second highest in India — this year, Karna-taka topped the country with over 10,000 students.

Interestingly, the Osmania University in Hyderabad, the hotbed of the Telangana agitation since December 2009, admitted nearly 1,500 students so far this year compared to 1,250 last year.
Most students who took admissions in AP were from Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan and East African countries.

After Osmania University, the Andhra University, Vizag, and Kakatiya University, Warangal, rema-ined the preferred destinations for foreign students.

A joint report on the status of Higher Education in Ind-ia by the Confederation of Indian Economy and Union HRD ministry revealed that every year, an average of 27,530 foreign students take admissions in Indian universities.

Maharashtra stood at the third place with 4,369 admissions, followed by Tamil Nadu (2,383) and Delhi (1,529).

Maximum students who took admissions in Hyderabad have joined MSc courses (245), while 135 of them have joined MA courses.

Hour of Code - 10 million students in 170 countries try it !

Computer science exposure: ‘Hour of Code’ campaign reaches 10 million students

December 12, 2013 ; Source: Taylor Soper; code.org
So far, the “Hour of Code” movement seems to be working — at least from an exposure standpoint.
The campaign, part of Computer Science Education Week and created by Seattle-based Code.org, announced today that more than 10 million students in 170 countries have tried their hand at an Hour of Code lessons this week, writing more than 350 million lines of code at press time.
In what’s a good sign for the typically male-dominated tech industry, girls continue to out-code the boys this week, with females making up 53 percent of participants.

Code.org co-founder Hadi Partovi speaks at the 2013 GeekWire Summit.

“Halfway through ‘Computer Science Education Week,’ we can hardly believe the power of the this movement,” the company wrote.
“Hour of Code,” which kicked off Monday and ends Sunday, is designed to push computer science education in schools around the world and encourage students to spend at least one hour coding this week.
Hundreds are supporting the cause, from people like President Barack Obama to huge tech giants — including competing rivals. Apple and Microsoft Stores are offering up free tutorial classes this week, while companies like Google, Disney and Yahoo will feature Hour of Code on their home pages.
Code.org is a non-profit founded by brothers and tech entrepreneurs Ali and Hadi Partovi. Here’s Hadi Partovi talking about Code.org and the computer science education crisis in the U.S. at the 2013 GeekWire Summit:
